No Country for Old Men

2007 November 21

Film: No Country for Old Men
Director: Ethan and Joel Coen
Starring: Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem (Spanish actor!!), Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson, and Kelly Macdonald.

In General: Is it possible to hold one’s breath during the length of an entire movie? I think I may have. There’s no music, but perfect sound. No music is bizarre, especially since the other sounds and images draw you in, which is normally music’s job. Very daring, to have no music. And very effective, AND affective. My body was in knots. I loved when the trucks moved over the cattle grates….I thought some rap music was fading in at first. No such luck….cattle grates! Someone needs to take a mic out and record trucks moving back and forth over cattle grates. Interesting percussion sounds…..

What I Like: Wow, what’s not to like?! The acting is marvelous, the camera work is gorgeous, the writing is spectacular. This is my kind of humour: raw, dark, contradictory, dry. SO interesting. I want to watch it over and over.

What I Would Do Differently: More Woody Harrelson. He blows my mind. He’s probably one of the most interesting actors to look at.

Rating: VVVVV

Javier Bardem is the one for me. I cannot wait for this film to come out over here!
Coen brothers, Woody and Javier? I’m first in the queue.

    What a mix!

(I watched the L-word for two nights in a row – I quickly make new traditions – I still don’t like the characters but it liked the episode in general. It was Shane’s premier – do you remember? You’re looking very shane today ;) And there was a really great sequence with them all talking on the phone to each other. It was good! )

Yes! I love Woody Harrelson too. I don’t know why he doesn’t get more work. I’m not sure if it’s his choice or the casting folks.

The sound design on this film was genius.

I really want to see this movie again too.
